Traditional use of hemp in folk culture

www.konopa.cz
Abstract:

The use of hemp, together with flax, as a technical material has a very long history in our country. The talk focuses on the most frequent areas of hemp utilization, classical technologies of processing, and etymological curiosities in the textile industry vocabulary that obscure our current views on the once common occurrence of hemp materials.

1:30 PM

Doc. ing. Luboš Babička, Csc. - ČZU, CZ

Prospects of hemp farming development

Abstract:

Hemp (Cannabis sativa) used to be a common crop of our fields for centuries and together with flax represented important industrial materials. In addition to the stem, which constituted a fundamental resource for the textile industry, hemp seed had an important role in human nutrition. Due to its excellent nutritional composition, the seed is coming back to use in the food and cosmetic industries. This short talk covers the present state of hemp farming and utilization in the Czech Republic.

2:00 PM

Elaborating the technology of industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) farming for biomass and seed utilization

Abstract:

Industrial hemp farming has been on the rise in Europe since 1995, not only in the textile and paper industries but also in such areas as the building industry, car industry, pharmaceutics and furniture making. In spite of that, hemp farming in the Czech Republic has not spread much to this day. The reasons might include the availability of plant varieties together with the high prices of foreign varieties, lacking Czech seed banks, unresolved issues with the technologies for non-traditional growing, reaping and harvesting of stems and seeds. The monitoring of THC content in the plants according to the EU legislation must also be taken into account. The aim of the project currently undertaken by the Agritec company is to solve the above-mentioned issues, and to elaborate technological procedures for growing and post-harvest processing of industrial hemp in the Czech Republic. At the same time, the economic aspects of growing industrial hemp using the so called “allowance to settlement” method will be evaluated. The aim of the project is to establish suitable methods of industrial hemp farming with regard to different areas of farming, ways of harvesting, yield parameters, quality and the subsequent utilization of stem and seed production.

2:30 PM

Presenter: Ing. Boris Baňas - Konopa.sk, talk author: Benilda Sable, Hemp Oil Canada, Inc. - HEMP SEED OIL EUROPE LTD

Hemp: a versatile and tasty gluten-free ingredient

Abstract:

The talk deals with the possibilities of replacing flour and other ingredients with hemp seed products. Six different hemp products will be analysed: flour, protein powder, pressed products or forage cakes, roasted seeds, peeled seeds and hemp oil. The content of lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals is analysed in these materials. Special attention is paid to the fatty acid composition, dominated by unsaturated fatty acids, and fibre, which is the major carrier of polysaccharides. In conclusion, hemp can bring novelty and versatility to consumers and producers of gluten-free pastry while affording above-standard supply of proteins, fibre, iron, folic acid salts, and omega-3 fatty acids compared to other gluten-free alternatives.

3:30 PM

Natural construction materials in the building industry

Abstract:

In the current hectic times, more and more people find the solutions to their life needs in traditional natural procedures. And the building industry is no exception. Many builders consider silicates, acrylates, polystyrenes and plastics to be unacceptable materials, and they seek alternative solutions in materials that come from nature without any complicated and energy-demanding processes. The present construction materials market already offers numerous natural building solutions, from hemp insulation made from industrial hemp, through reed panels, to clay panels and clay plaster. This product range can satisfy even the most demanding customers that aim for eco-friendly building.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 26th: USING HEMP IN MEDICINE
1:00 PM

MUDr. Pavel Kubů – Petition for therapeutic hemp www.lecebnekonopi.cz (CZ)

In support of the petition for therapeutic hemp – a historical return of hemp into surgeries and pharmacies or a cynical game with human suffering?

Abstract:

The petition for therapeutic hemp was published on August 15th, 2011. It elicited spontaneous positive reactions from politicians, experts, artists and general public, which resulted in the establishment of a working group of the Government Council for Drug Policy Coordination, supported by the chairperson of the Chamber of Deputies, Miroslava Němcová. The aim of the group lead by Prof. Tomáš Zima, the dean of the 1st Medical School, Charles University in Prague, is to reach a common opinion and potentially suggest legislation changes in December 2011, that would grant access to therapeutic hemp to Czech patients as soon as possible. If the political will lasts, a legislation process will be initiated leading to the passing of the required changes. The process of making therapeutic hemp available in the Czech Republic is going to be long and full of difficult obstacles, every single one of which might be fatal for the legal hemp treatment. Thus, despite the negotiations already underway, the support of the petition is still important and can play a critical role.

Therapeutic hemp in Israel – the journey from one to 7,000 patients – a lesson for the Czech Republic

Abstract:

An activist trying since 1995 to facilitate the access of patients to therapeutic hemp in Israel. At present, eight official hemp farmers licensed by the Ministry of Health serve almost seven thousand patients in Israel. The talk conveys the experience and lessons learnt on the hard road leading from liberating the therapeutic marijuana from the prison of ignorance and lies to its official use in mainstream healthcare institutions. After Holland and Canada, Israel is only the third country in the world to have launched a therapeutic hemp program. Boaz's experience from Israel can help build a stable and economically viable program of therapeutic hemp use in the Czech Republic.

Medieval medicine, the teachings of Rasis, a Persian doctor from the 9th century

Abstract:

The medieval medicine had to tackle not only common diseases, as it is today, but also frequent cuts from wars and minor fights. The teachings of the Persian doctor Rasis (*854 +935) formed the basis of the medical discipline until the 15th century. Other scholars, such as Avicenna, also built upon his work. Master William of Burgundy (+1180), also known as William Roger Cogenis of Parma, also taught the methods of Rasis. Some of his students were also Czech. One of them, whose name is not known, had written down notes on the ways of treating wounds, and preparing and using materials needed in medicine. A part of them was published in the 1868 anthology celebrating the 70th anniversary of the birth of František Palacký.

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 27th: THERAPEUTIC HEMP
12:00 PM

William Texier - G.H.E. - (General Hydroponics of Europe), FR

Advantages of hydroponics in indoor growing

Abstract:

Hydroponics offers relatively few advantages in the area of indoor gardening. This short presentation examines the benefits that can be expected from hydroponic growing, together with the fundamental criteria that need to be met by the growers for successful operation.

1:00 PM

Josef Krejčík aka Mr. José, author of the book How to grow indoor, (CZ)

Plants illumination (light sources, head lamps, cultivation boxes, ballasts etc.)

Abstract:

The amount of light emitted by a light source differs significantly from the amount of light that reaches the plants. In order to get the maximum amount of light to the plants, we need to carefully select the light sources, head lamps and reflective foils. Furthermore, we need to take additional steps in order not to waste light. The talk will present the audience with the results of extensive tests performed in the laboratories of the Electrotechnical Testing Institute in Prague. By comparing and evaluating the factors that impact on light loss on the way from the light source to the plants, various conditions for growing plants under artificial lighting were established. As a result of the measurements, useful information was obtained on the impact of the lamp distance from the illuminated area, and the real properties were revealed of various light sources and cultivation boxes. Many of these results were previously unknown.

1:30 PM

Julian S. Karadjov (Balkan Plant Science), Bulgaria

Contamination of therapeutic hemp with heavy metals: a risk, that can be avoided

Abstract:

Despite the fact that the Bulgarian law defines marijuana as “a high-risk narcotic with no therapeutic use”, a lot of work is being carried out in the first legal marijuana greenhouse in the country. The talk deals with the research activities of Balkan Plant Science (Bulgaria) and Advanced Nutrients (Canada) concerning the development of efficient and safe fertilizers for growing medical-grade marijuana. The talk details the potential risks of marijuana contamination stemming from the presence of heavy metals: the EU legislation on fertilizer contamination, possible sources of contamination and their control, and how heavy metals might influence natural and synthetic chelators. The practical implementation of these principles is illustrated by an analysis of data coming from the greenhouses of therapeutic marijuana growers. The optimistic conclusion is that heavy metal contamination, that can pose a serious problem to the patients, can be avoided by following simple rules during the control of all materials used for fertilizer production.

2:30 PM

Dr. Kurt Blaas & DI Pusch Otmar - Cannabis Austria Medizin (AT)

Treatment with THC from a doctor's perspective

Abstract:

The talk will outline the areas of the medical use of hemp, introduce the Austrian legislation and practical treatment, and patient data from a year-long treatment will be presented.

3:00 PM

Peter Rausch - NEKTAR – COSMETICS & CHEMISTRY, (AT)

Cannabis – research and development

Abstract:

The degree of general prejudices against drugs results in an absolutely distorted image of the real effects of medicines and their use. The comparison between legal and illegal drugs shows that anti-drug laws do not correlate at all with the relevant scientific facts. The talk will focus on the comparison of hemp with other drugs, the real effects and dangers of legal and illegal drugs. The development of novel synthetic cannabinoids opens many new avenues in the area of medicine. The discovery of Cannabis-receptors and natural endocannabinoids in the human body in the early nineties started the development of cannabinoid research world-wide. Thousands of synthetic cannabinoids have been developed, some of them being 8,000-fold more potent than THC, with various pharmacological effects, that will broaden the possibilities of therapeutic treatment of many diseases in future. The development of a new method, that allows for dissolving THC and other cannabinoids in water and boosting their effects, brings new and cheap options to the area of the therapeutic use of THC and other cannabinoids.
